In southern CA Hispanics often assumed I was one of them, and when I responded politely but apologetically to say I didn't speak or comprehend Spanish, they were offended, assuming I was pretending to be not one of them. Such mistakes of deductions from looks are not meant to be offensive necessarily, often they are natural. It became a fun game for me to mask people to guess when they ask where I am from, and replies are very diverse but rarely accurate, and I love the diversity of replies. Proves humanity is as fluid as waters of the ocean. And yes, if I see someone with certain looks, I can only ask, otherwise one cannot say if they are from Japan or Northeast parts of India. One beautiful young woman we met near Madras, with husband and child to that looked obviously Indian, had oriental looks and eyes a very beautiful green, I thought she might be from Ladakh, turned out she was from Kazakhstan and husband a U.S. citizen of purely European ancestry. Lovely meeting diverse people around the world. And incidentally our maternal uncle's called us three sisters Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan, due to our eyes being not as large as our mom's, while baby cheeks left very little space for those eyes to be much at all. They were not being offensive, they loved their sister and us.
